TREATIES, CONVENTIONS AND AGREEMENTS BETWEEN AUSTRIA AND BULGARIA (1945-1989)

  • On 7 March 1947 diplomatic relations between Austria and Bulgaria were officially restored
  • On 26 July 1947, the first post-war Bulgarian-Austrian trade agreement was signed in Sofia
  • In 1948, a second agreement on the mutual exchange of goods between the two countries was signed.
  • On 10 March 1955 an agreement was signed between Bulgaria and Austria on the regulation of navigation on the Danube
  • On 18 December 1959, an agreement was signed between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria on the international carriage of goods
  • A treaty was signed in Vienna on 2 April 1963 between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria on the settlement of open financial matters. (By means of this treaty Sofia undertook to pay 38 Austrian creditors compensation of USD 350 000 for the loss of property valuables in Bulgaria after the end of the Second World War.)
  • In April 1963, a new bilateral agreement on the mutual exchange of goods was concluded between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria

Several agreements and treaties were signed between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria during the visit of Austrian Foreign Minister Bruno Kraiski to Sofia in 1965:

  • Treaty on Legal Relations and Legal Assistance
  • Agreement on social insurance and veterinary convention
  • Programme for cultural, scientific and technical exchange, which regulated the exchange of students and the establishment of a Bulgarian language lectureship at the University of Graz)
  • On 21 April 1967, an agreement between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria on the abolition of the visa regime
  • On 20 October 1967, a treaty on legal assistance was signed between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria
  • On 27 October 1967, an agreement on the tax treatment of cross-border passenger and freight traffic between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria was signed in Sofia
  • On 6 May 1968, an agreement on economic, industrial and technical cooperation and an agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Federal Government of the Republic of Austria were concluded.
  • On 9 May 1968, an agreement between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria on the granting of preferential customs duties was signed in Vienna.
  • On 27 May 1968, a long-term trade agreement was signed in Sofia between the Government of the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Federal Government of the Republic of Austria.
  • An agreement between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria on scientific and technical cooperation was signed in Vienna on 14 April 1969.
  • In 1970, an agreement was signed between the Federal Minister of Transport of the Republic of Austria and the Minister of Transport of the People's Republic of Bulgaria on passenger transport.
  • On 13 October 1971 a bilateral agreement was concluded between the Federal Government of Austria and the People's Republic of Bulgaria on payment transactions.
  • On 22 February 1971 an agreement on cooperation in the field of tourism was concluded between the Austrian Federal Government and the Government of the People's Republic of Bulgaria.
  • On 28 June 1973, two agreements were signed in Vienna between the Republic of Austria and the People's Republic of Bulgaria: on the reciprocal granting of most-favoured-nation treatment and a long-term agreement on economic relations between the two countries
  • A Consular Convention between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria and an agreement on the equivalence of secondary education certificates between the two countries were signed in Sofia on 14 May 1975.
  • On 13 May 1976 an agreement on equivalence of universities was signed in Vienna.
  • On 17 September 1976, an agreement on cooperation in the field of health care was signed in Sofia between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria.
  • On 18 September 1978, an Additional Protocol to the Agreement between the People's Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Austria on equivalence in the university sector (signed on 13 May 1976 in Vienna) was signed.
  • A long-term programme for the extension and deepening of economic, industrial and scientific-technical cooperation between the Republic of Austria and the People's Republic of Bulgaria was signed in Vienna on 3 June 1982.
  • On 6 July 1982 an agreement was signed between the customs services of the Republic of Austria and the People's Republic of Bulgaria.

In the 1970s and 1980s, cooperation between Bulgarian and Austrian research, cultural and sports organisations was also given a contractual basis, with the following agreements being signed:

  • between the Ludwig Boltzmann Society and the Medical Academy (Sofia) - 1973.
  • between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Austrian Academy of Sciences - 1977.
  • between the Austrian Gymnastic Sports Union and the Bulgarian Union for Physical Education and Sport - 1977.
  • between the House of Art in Vienna and the Union of Bulgarian Artists - 1981.
  • between the Austrian Society for Modern Music and the Union of Bulgarian Composers - 1982.
